An Anniversary Of Telling Time: The History Of Grandfather Clocks
Telling time has included an evolution that has determined when things can take place in society. From the sun dial to the contemporary clock, is a rich history of getting to know when things should happen. What has moved time into a modern approach of this is the grandfather clocks. They have slowly formulated their way into telling time in a different manner, and provide a continuous tick that has provided an anniversary of centuries of telling time that is now moving towards the future.
Grandfather clocks first began to move into history during the 1500s, through the inventor, Galileo. When coming up with this particular innovation, he found that when a pendulum pulled one way, it also could pull weight. By causing this to be a continuous movement, it could allow for the hands on a clock to continuously move forward each time the pendulum would swing. He then attached these to a back area that acted as an "engine" when it was turned with a pin.
By the mid-1600s, grandfather clocks began to be more prevalent in society. This specifically began to take place through royalty using the clocks as a luxury item in order to tell time. After a few years, they moved into the general society, then evolving into contemporary innovations that have provided more options for being able to tell time.
Since the beginning of the grandfather clocks are several varieties that have become a part of the home. The first way in which these changed was through the way that time was monitored. In the beginning, a pin or key had to be used in order to wind the clock, usually every 30 hours. This would allow the weight to continue to pull the pendulum. Further than this, this style of clock has moved into a range of designs that have become a part of the home. This is first divided by size, where there is a difference in mantel clocks to sit on a piece of furniture, wall or hanging clocks and large and tall clocks that sit on the floor. Within these options are also specific designs that come from traditional styles of clock makers and contemporary options that allow your home to have a piece of furniture that can say something unique. Along with the specific clock styles are more ornate looks and designs that have been added into the clocks. For example, some of the clocks will have designs such as a sunburst or a moon dial in order to add in more of an ornate look. This will add in an extra flash of style to the clocks.
